Liverpool & Sefton Chambers of Commerce is a private sector membership organisation that provides business services intended to support our objective to make Liverpool the best place to start, operate or locate a business in the UK.

The Director of Business Development is an integral role for the Chamber of Commerce, responsible primarily for the engagement and recruitment of businesses to membership, the creation and maintenance of a portfolio of business services and the ongoing fulfilment of business members’ expectations and support requirements.

The role requires an individual with credibility, honesty and personality, with a genuine desire to provide businesses in the Liverpool and Sefton areas with a means for achieving objectives and boosting the economy of the region. The individual will be capable of understanding the needs of business and finding solutions through a detailed knowledge of connections, initiatives and opportunities within the private sector (and potentially public sector) of the region.

The role requires the generation of income to support the sustainability of the Chamber of Commerce, yet the critical element of the function is to ensure that value is provided to clients and the strengthening and development of the Chamber business network is achieved.

The post-holder will be an integral part of the Chamber team, generate their own leads both independently and in conjunction with colleagues in the organisation and work to ensure that objectives are understood and met by the Chamber.

The role is fundamentally a relationship-building position whereby a sale must not be the end, but rather the beginning of a company support programme of activity and impact.

Key Accountabilities

  • To recruit businesses to the Chamber of Commerce membership in sufficient volume to ensure the sustainability and growth of the business network
  • To undertake an appropriate and sufficient amount of external business engagement to promote the Chamber’s work, commercial proposition and value
  • To achieve a revenue objective from Chamber of Commerce services, focussing predominantly upon membership subscriptions
  • To take ownership and oversight of the Chamber’s membership services proposition and liaise with service provider partners and key stakeholders to ensure its commercial viability and relevance.
  • Support the creation of a network of ambassadors, spokespeople and expertise which can be enabled and enacted for advocacy and lobbying campaigns initiated by the Chamber
  • Articulate to potential and existing members the Chamber’s role in shaping the voice of business and its focus upon key issues
  • To understand, empathise and recognise the principal drivers of businesses and ensure the appropriate solution to specific issues can be obtained.
  • To work with colleagues to ensure sales focus aligns with marketing campaigns
  • To contribute to the selling of sponsorship and tickets for the Chamber’s events programme and the additional services provided by the Chamber including international trade and export documentation
  • Attendance at internal and external networking meetings to raise awareness of the Chamber and drive sales
  • To provide feedback from meetings with potential and existing members to shape Chamber activity
  • To identify opportunities for upselling and cross selling of additional Chamber products and services
