Archbishop McMahon toured pioneering cancer research labs

The Archbishop of Liverpool has met with leading researchers, scientists and clinicians in Liverpool who are pioneering advances in cancer research.

The Most Reverend Malcolm McMahon, made the visit to the North West Cancer Research Centre at the University of Liverpool this week and met with Dr Jason Parsons, who gave an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the state-of-the-art research laboratories.

The ninth Archbishop of Liverpool inherited patronage of North West Cancer Research when he took up his title in 2014.

His visit comes as the charity announces a commitment to funding more than £13million worth of cancer research over the next five years, including projects based at the University of Liverpool.

During his visit, the Archbishop discovered how Dr Parsons is using funding from North West Cancer Research to advance our understanding of effective treatments for head and neck cancer patients.

Archbishop McMahon, said: “It was a pleasure and a privilege to see the work being done by North West Cancer Research. I admire the enthusiasm and dedication of all those involved in this vital work and I have no hesitation in encouraging people to support this essential research in any way possible.”

North West Cancer Research will fund around £8.1million worth of research at the University of Liverpool over the next five years. This includes laboratory-based research, as well as support for post-doctoral researchers and PhD students, helping to attract some of the world’s leading cancer researchers to Liverpool.

Nigel Lanceley, chair of North West Cancer Research, said: “We are honoured to welcome Archbishop Malcolm McMahon to the North West Cancer Research Centre.

“As a charity we strive to only support the very best-in-class cancer research and as such we are lucky enough to be working with some of the city’s and country’s top scientists and clinicians.

“We have had a successful start to our fundraising year and we have announced a significant £13million commitment to funding research here in the North West over the next five years.

“On behalf of everyone at North West Cancer Research I would like to thank the Archbishop for his continued patronage and support for the work we do.”
