It may be a bit of a cliché, but a new year is a fantastic time to learn a new skill. We all know the benefits that learning something new can bring; keeping an active brain, switching off from work and meeting new people, not to mention having lots of fun! So, as we go into 2018, why not get creative with one of our relaxed and informal courses. They also make great Christmas presents!

Our fun, friendly evening and weekend courses are open to everyone and take place in a range of great locations across the city. We have lots of new courses and venues for 2018 including the Williamson Tunnels and TUSK in the Baltic Triangle, as well as our Saturday dot-art Club for 7-11 year olds, so get your budding artists signed up too!

NEW for this term at Faith Bebbington’s Studio, in February we have an exciting we have a 3 day course in Graffiti, led by street artist David Andrews, where you will have the chance to find and develop your own style of urban art. Plus we have a Wood Carving for beginners course, led by Faith herself across 3 consecutive Sundays in March. This short course includes an introduction to wood carving, a look at the range of carving tools, how to select and choose your wood, different ways to finish the surface and finally, the creation of your own wood carving inspired by natural forms.

Another NEW course taking place at the Friends of Williamson Tunnels is Sketching in the Tunnels, a unique opportunity for both beginners and experienced artists to spend a Sunday morning drawing and learning new skills in this fascinating location.

We are heading to the Baltic Triangle this season, working with TUSK in Northern Lights to offer two NEW 10 week evening classes. Digital Photography: Take Better Photos, led by photographer Mark Reeves, aims to give you the knowledge, skills and confidence to get the best from your digital camera in order to take better photographs. Drawing for Relaxation offers the opportunity to take time out of your busy schedule to spend time focusing on yourself and aims to encourage you to relax through drawing and being creative. Being creative through drawing even for just a short period of time on a regular basis can help you focus and create a sense of wellbeing.

We also have a NEW 10 week evening course starting at Hope Street Ltd, led by popular tutor Roy Munday. Watercolour for Beginners. Watercolour is the most popular medium for people who take up art and this course is designed for both absolute beginners and those more advanced who are seeking to improve. We will also be continuing our 10 week Portrait Drawing course with artist Kathy Dereli. Starting from the basics, your tutor will provide exercises and tuition to help you improve your portrait drawing or help get you started.

Over at Bluecoat February once again sees them hosting the popular 10 week evening courses in Life Drawing, Beginners Painting (Acrylics) and Jewellery Making in Metal, as well as a Beginners Digital Photography Day in March, perfect for those who want to get their cameras off the auto setting and two Photography Masterclasses in April, in Composition and Exposure, for those who want to extend their skills further.

If you prefer weekends, in March we have a Drawing for Everyone course, held over 3 consecutive Sundays, in which expert tutor Roy Munday will give you all the skills you need to start, refresh or improve your drawing technique. In February we also have a new Experimenting with Mixed Media Sunday workshop, in which you can try out a range of technique and media to create your own unique work of art.

Finally, after a successful pilot this Autumn, our dot-art Club for 7-11 years olds will be running in two six week blocks, starting 6th January and 17th February. Every Saturday morning our young artists will be encouraged to develop their drawing skills and build a lifelong love of art!
