ACC Liverpool is celebrating 10 years since it hosted its first large national conference.

Since opening its doors to the Liberal Democrats spring conference in March 2008, the complex - home to BT Convention Centre, Echo Arena and Exhibition Centre Liverpool - has welcomed 6.47 million visitors and generated £1.45 billion in economic benefit for the city region.

More than 1,000 conferences have taken place for 850,000 delegates over the past decade with highlights including BBC Worldwide Showcase, which returned for the seventh time this February; the Labour Party conference – returning for the third time in September – the Royal College of Nursing and NHS Confederation.

Large international conferences have included the European Association for International Education, Eurospine and the Union World Conference on Lung Health. Forthcoming international congresses include Uni Global Union World Congress and Health Systems Research.

Meanwhile Echo Arena has hosted around 1,200 performances and has welcomed 5.4 million visitors. Entertainment highlights have included the European MTV Awards, the Davis Cup, Sir Paul McCartney and BBC Sports Personality of the Year, which returned for a second time in December 2017.

Bob Prattey, chief executive of The ACC Liverpool Group, said: “This is a milestone year as we celebrate 10 years since we opened which gives us the opportunity to reflect on the success of the past and look ahead to future developments.

“Prior to 2008, there wasn’t a conference and entertainment venue on the scale of ACC Liverpool in the city. Our construction was an integral part of the regeneration of the region which has continued ever since and will continue into the future.

“We are proud to have brought so many major events over the past decade – from top international shows to groundbreaking global conferences. We look forward to continuing to entertain visitors and to provide a world class award-winning venue for leading academics and professionals to meet.”

This year also marks a decade since Echo Arena hosted the opening ceremony for Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture. ACC Liverpool is at the heart of a city wide programme of exciting, inspirational and thought-provoking projects to mark the 10th anniversary of the city’s reign as European Capital of Culture. Although inspired by the huge success of 2008, Liverpool 2018 is focused on the renaissance which has transformed the region over the past decade.

Echo Arena has commissioned a song and film to celebrate its milestone year which will be released today on social media (Thurs March 8th). Local singer-songwriter Katy Alex and songwriter Cameron Warren have written and performed an original song entitled ‘Home’ which accompanies footage, filmed by BAFTA nominated Liverpool production company Hurricane Films, capturing the excitement and emotion of a crowd enjoying a variety of arena events. Michelle Kemp, assistant director – marketing of ACC Liverpool, said: “We really wanted to celebrate the arena and the people it belongs to, with the footage focusing on the audience having the time of their lives and the emotion and experience of an event night.

“We commissioned Hurricane Films to capture this during arena events and Katy and Cameron to write and perform a song to accompany the edit. Everyone involved in the project has exciting credits to their names and an emotional connection with the city’s arena and its creative music sector. We are thrilled with the result which we hope our customers will enjoy, like and share.”

Mayor Joe Anderson added: “ACC Liverpool has been one of the city’s most incredible success stories of the last decade. It is firmly established as a much-loved venue and is now part of the fabric of the city, bringing the world’s biggest artists and global conferences to Liverpool.

“The investment that we put into creating Exhibition Centre Liverpool and Pullman Liverpool hotel is already paying dividends, providing much needed additional space and quality hotel beds.

“ACC Liverpool is not just a building – it is an integral part of the city region economy, supporting thousands of jobs and playing a key role in raising Liverpool’s profile, regionally, nationally and internationally.”
