Whether you’re looking for the perfect gift for a creative loved one or hoping..

Whether you’re looking for the perfect gift for a creative loved one or hoping to fend off the January blues for yourself, our art classes and workshops are the answer! Our fun, friendly evening and weekend courses are open to everyone and take place in a range of great locations across the city. This season we are welcoming two fantastic new partner venues; Metal at Edge Hill Station and Make North Docks as well as expanding our range of courses once again.

At Bluecoat from February, we have the return of our popular 10 week evening courses in Life Drawing and Beginners Painting (Acrylics). Joining these is a 10 week Level 1 Digital Photography course, which is for those who would like to move from being a keen beginner to a competent intermediate photographer. Each week of the course will include both theory and practical exercises. We have 3 day courses in Abstract Painting, taking place on 3 consecutive Sundays from late March, when you can delve into the imaginative world of abstract painting, learning about layering, materials, composition and texture, and Drawing for Everyone, perfect for the complete beginner or those more advanced who feel they need to improve their drawing skills. These are joined by single day workshops in Feltmaking, Beginners Digital Photography, and a Photography Masterclass in Composition.

Our first NEW venue for this season is Metal at Edge Hill Station. Here we will be holding our popular evening courses in Watercolour for Beginners and Drawing Techniques, designed by professional artist Sarah Jane Richards to develop observational and expressive drawing techniques and skills, as well as a NEW 8 week evening course in Level 2 Digital Photography, running on Wednesday evenings. This course is for those who would like to continue developing their existing photography skills to become a competent intermediate photographer and is designed for EITHER those who have already attended our Level 1 evening course or the Beginners 1 day course, or for those who already have a good basic knowledge of camera functions.

Our second NEW venue is Make North Docks. Here you can try your hand at Monoprinting, led by artist Bev Evans over 3 consecutive Saturdays. You will get hands-on with acrylic paints, a variety of stencils (both man-made and from nature), textured surfaces, masking and sgraffito techniques (scratching/drawing patterns into the paint) to develop your own set of prints, gift tags, envelopes and printed gift bags. Also at Make, on Thursday evenings, will be our Portrait Drawing course, led by Kathy Dereli.

At Faith Bebbington’s Studio, we have a Wood Carving for beginners course, led by Faith herself across 3 consecutive Sundays in March. This is a hands-on course with an emphasis on the creative design process and learning through practising the process of carving. The tuition is tailored to support and guide each individual through their own wood carving project in the informal atmosphere of the artist's studio.

We are also returning to the Friends of Williamson Tunnels on Sundays in March and April for Sketching in the Tunnels, a unique opportunity for both beginners and experienced artists to spend a Sunday morning drawing and learning new skills in this fascinating location.

Finally, our dot-art Club for creative children is now settled at the fantastic Baltic Creative on Jamaica Street. We now run afternoon sessions for 10-13 year olds, in two six week blocks, starting 13th January and 3rd March. Every week our young artists will be encouraged to develop their drawing skills and build a lifelong love of art under the expert guidance of artist Sarah Jane Richards.
