An event in aid of Local Solutions is due to take place at the House of Lords

An event in aid of Local Solutions is due to take place at the House of Lords on Monday the 13th May. The event will be hosted by Lord Borwick and will pay tribute to the life, work and legacy of Sir Bert Massie CBE DL.
Sir Bert Massie was a long-standing trustee of Local Solutions, a non-for-profit charity that delivers services to support individuals, families and communities with a primary focus on those experiencing disadvantage, exclusion and vulnerability.

Sir Bert was also a key figure in the disability rights movement. A wheelchair user himself, after contracting Polio as an infant, Sir Bert understood the discriminatory struggles that disabled people face daily. He was failed by the education system and had to fight prejudice to achieve his various qualifications including a postgraduate degree in Social Care. He dedicated his life to the advancement of disability rights by campaigning for more accessible buildings and transport.

His expansive career saw him take on several significant roles including; Chairman of the Disability Rights Commission, Chief Executive of the Royal Association for Disability and Rehabilitation, Governor of Motability, a scheme for disabled drivers, Vice President and Patron of a number of disability charities and a Governor of LJMU as well as serving on a number of government advisory committees concerned with disability.
He played a significant role in the establishment of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, was knighted in January 2007 for his services to disabled people and was commissioned as a Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside in 2014.

Sir Bert sadly passed away in October 2017 after losing his battle with cancer. Local Solutions’ Chief Executive, Steve Hawkins said:

“Sir Bert is greatly missed by us all - his wise and humorous guidance was inspiring. The cause of the human rights of disabled people, championed by Sir Bert, is something that remains a key priority for the board at Local Solutions.”

The celebratory event will also mark the publication of Sir Bert’s memoirs ‘A Life Without Limits’. The autobiography tells the story of his life in Liverpool, the prejudice he faced due to his disability and his journey as a disability rights activist. All proceeds from book will be donated to Local Solutions.

Between 50-60 guests are expected to attend the event to celebrate his life, with employees and trustees of Local Solutions receiving invitations.
