Free Event To Help You Do Your VAT Online
Big changes are on the way and you need to start preparing nowUnder Government proposals it will become compulsory, from April 2010, for VAT registered businesses with an annual VAT exclusive turnover of GBP100,000 or more and all newly registered businesses to file their VAT returns online and make payment electronically. Paper returns will still be an option for the remaining VAT registered businesses, but this will be reviewed in the run up to 2012.
We are inviting you to a free event where we will show you:
- how to get started with VAT Online and other online services
- how it will benefit your business
- a demonstration of some of our online services
- what is available now, including information about paying electronically
- what is planned for the future.
We will also let you know where to get further help and support if you need it.
We will process bookings on a first-come, first-served basis until Monday 6 July 2009.

IMPORTANT please note: If you would like us to help you to register and enrol for VAT Online, you will need to bring the following information along with you:
- VAT Registration Number
- Principal place of business postcode
- Date of registration (ie. DD/MM/YYYY)
- Final month of last VAT return submitted
- The Box 5 figure on your last submitted VAT return
The first three facts are on your certificate of VAT Registration (VAT 4); the other two facts are on your last filed VAT return.
If you are already enrolled for other HMRC Online Services please also bring along your User ID and Password.
If you cannot attend an event and want to get started now, please follow the steps below to register and enrol. If you need help during this process, please contact the Online Services Helpdesk on 0845 6055 999.
To find the right section of our website:
1. Visit www.hmrc.gov.uk
2. Under 'do it online' which is on the left hand side of the page, select 'VAT Online'
3. You will arrive at 'Online Services Login'.
First time online user should select 'new users' and then move to step 4, below.
If you are already enrolled for other HMRC Online Services, enter your existing User ID and Password where prompted and from the Online Services Main Menu, select the service 'VAT Online'. Under the 'Manage Your VAT' section of the page, select to 'Enrol for this service', then move to step 10 as below.
4. Select 'Individua'’ or 'Organisation'
5. Select 'VAT'
Then, to register and enrol you will need to:
6. Read and accept the terms and conditions.
7. Enter your full name and an optional email address.
8. Create a password.
9. Write down the User ID displayed on the screen. You will need this as well as your password, every time you log onto the VAT Online service. We will post you confirmation of the User ID.
10. Type in the five facts about your business (see above) so we can be sure who you are. Once your online account is set up you can immediately complete and send us your VAT return online.
11. We'll still send you an Activation Code (sometimes called a PIN) that allows you to notify us about any changes to your business details along with full details on how to use it.
You only need to go through this registration process once then you can access all the features and functions of VAT Online.
