Liverpool Safest in UK

Tony Jopson, Business Crime Reduction Manager: "We are the safest city centre in the country."

Current figures show a significant decrease of crime in Liverpool. In fact, crime in Liverpool city centre is at a ten year low. In the last three months, shoplifting has dropped by 18%, and commercial burglary by 17%, on the same quarter in 2010. Not coincidentally, Liverpool Crime Alert has been in crime reduction for eight years, with a constant improvement in figures

Mr Jopson, head of the Liverpool Crime Alert division provided by the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, oversees crime alert schemes which bring businesses together with partner agencies to tackle crime and disorder. He says: "We focus on shoplifting and credit card fraud, but also burglary of commercial premises, all of which have seen a huge decrease.

"I come across people who are loathe to talk about crime and business because they fear it may be regarded as a negative. They feel that to talk of crime against businesses, whether positive or negative, should be avoided."

However, a survey of 200+ retail members of Crime Alert, conducted by two people on the Chamber's Graduate Retention scheme, found that 70% believed joining Liverpool Crime reduced their losses in the past twelve months; 38% of members saw a reduction in losses last year; and 92% were happy with the services provided by Crime Alert.

Tony's motto is "Simplicity, Loyalty and Results." Through a simple approach, and the loyalty of such stores as JD Sports, John Lewis and Debenhams, Liverpool Crime Alert is providing a high level of service. The battle against shoplifting remains ongoing, but these results show that, thanks to Crime Alert, few British city centres are safer than Liverpool.
