Why High Speed Rail
Growth: £44bn in net benefits from a new high-speed rail network.
Connectivity: Faster and more reliable connections between Britain's cities and to Europe.
Investment: Increased capacity for passenger and freight travel.
Building the economy
The Government's business case suggests £43.7bn in net benefits in contrast to £17.1bn in net costs from a new high-speed rail network.
However, this doesn't necessarily take into account many of the other wider economic benefits that are harder to quantify. It makes it easier for companies to network, recruit workers, find customers, specialise and become more productive.
Bringing Britain closer together
The network can help bridge the north-south divide by providing greater connections to London and internationally; allowing firms and cities to specialize and serve larger markets; and by providing opportunities for redevelopment.
Investment in infrastructure
A new high speed rail network will free up capacity on existing lines which will make local journeys for many quicker and more frequent - this will help communities and be particularly useful on those lines which are very congested like the West Coast mainline.
It is estimated that some of Britain's key rail routes will be completely full during peak times in the next 20 years.
About the 'Yes to High Speed Rail' campaign
The campaign represent employers from across the country who believe Britain needs a modern, high speed rail network to meet the challenges of the 21st Century.
Their case is backed by business people from across the country. Some of these business people employ large numbers of people, some employ just a handful.
All are united by a belief that high speed rail will significantly help Britain's economy, creating jobs and boosting parts of the country that need it, particularly in the Midlands and the North. They believe that it will make ordinary passengers' lives easier by freeing up capacity on existing lines, bringing better services to more people.
