Held on July 30th, Pleavin Power’s Future Power Day provided an exciting glimpse into the world of engineering while addressing the industry’s critical skills gap. Hosted at its state-of-the-art facilities, the event aimed to inspire the next generation of engineers and provide valuable insights into diverse career paths within the power generation industry.
The event effectively highlighted the field of engineering, with participants aged 15-21 diving into hands-on activities that sparked their curiosity and creativity. They built circuits, learnt about generator repairs, and even operated a remotely controlled crane. These practical demonstrations not only offered a window into the daily life of an engineer but also underscored the varied skills necessary in the power generation sector.
A standout moment was the engaging talk and Q&A session with Jack, CEO of Pleavin Power. His story began at age 16 and has since unfolded into a tale of perseverance, innovation, and dedication. As he shared his journey to building a multi-million-pound business, Jack inspired the audience, illustrating what young, ambitious minds can achieve with the right mindset.
“I learnt that if you have an idea, don’t give up on it. If you have an idea and ambition, you can make it a reality” – Jack Pleavin, CEO Pleavin Power
The event also marked the launch of the Future Power Academy, a new initiative aimed at equipping the next generation of engineers with the knowledge, skills, and passion needed to drive the industry’s future. Through firsthand training, mentorship, and real-world projects, the Academy is set to become a cornerstone in developing tomorrow's engineers.
Pleavin Power has acknowledged the specialised skills essential for the power generation industry and is looking to address this. As Jack says, “Currently, there is not an apprenticeship that fits the business. As it is such a specialised field, we need an apprenticeship that incorporates both the electrical and mechanical sides of the role. We are currently working with Wirral Met College to create an apprenticeship that will suit the needs of the business. This is achievable, and we are hoping to create one that is fit for purpose.”
When Future Power Day concluded, it was evident that the open day had met its goal of inspiring young minds and addressing the industry's skills gap. With the Future Power Academy, Pleavin Power remains committed to nurturing the engineers of tomorrow, ensuring an exciting and innovative future for the sector.
Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. One participant remarked, "It was fun and engaging," adding that it was "helpful in understanding the industry and the opportunities available."
Looking ahead, Pleavin Power plans to host two Future Power Day events each year, with the next one scheduled for November.
