Big Lottery funding will allow My Time to expand in 2017

Liverpool Carers Centre, which is run by local charity Local Solutions, is planning to expand its MyTime initiative thanks to funding from The Big Lottery Fund.

Data from the 2011 census shows that over 50,600 people in Liverpool identified themselves as unpaid carers and Carers UK recently identified that 8 out of 10 carers felt lonely or isolated as a result of looking after a loved one.

MyTime aims to tackle this feeling of isolation by offering carers the opportunity to take a break from their demanding roles through a range of complimentary leisure activities. There are over 15 hotels in Liverpool signed up to the scheme -including Malmaison, The Pullman Hotel, The Hilton and Hope Street Hotel - offering an overnight stay with breakfast free of charge.

Carers have also enjoyed a theatre trip courtesy of the Liverpool Everyman Playhouse. This number is now set to expand thanks to The Big Lottery which has funded a project coordinator and administration worker for three years. Their role is to develop the initiative with the aim of offering a greater variety of activities such as meals, theatre trips, sporting activities or afternoon tea.

It also hoped that MyTime can be taken nationwide and replicated across the UK. MyTime has been very successful since it was launched in 2015 and has received excellent feedback from carers. William, a carer for his son, stayed at the Pullman Hotel in Liverpool and said, “One night away helped us amazingly, we didn’t think about anything and it took the pressure off”.

Not only has the project had a massive impact on carers but the organisations involved have also benefitted. They get a real feel good factor about doing something good for a local cause and it also helps towards their CSR which is becoming increasingly important for businesses. If you are an organisation and would like to get involved, you can find out more information by contacting Maureen Austin, MyTime Co-ordinator at
