A new name but an established face in Transport Consultancy joins Systra

Phil Halewood FCILT MCIHT has recently joined the Northern England Business Unit of SYSTRA Ltd. as an Associate Director, strengthening their Transportation offer in the North West and North of England.

He moves from Celeritas Transport Services Ltd. where he was heavily involved in the bus interchange and the Rail Stations Devolution projects for TfGM from mid 2014. He previously held positions in Merseytravel, Arup and other consultancies.

SYSTRA Ltd. is the UK subsidiary of SYSTRA Group, a global transport consultancy and engineering company which traces its origins back to 1957 and the provision of engineering support for SNCF (French Railways) and RATP (Transport Authority for the Paris Region). The corporate line ’SYSTRA keeps the world moving through connecting people and places.’, certainly resonates with their current global workload of rail schemes. Last month in France they were behind the opening of 500 km of high speed rail lines on two routes; LGV Sud Europe Atlantique and LGV Bretagne - Pays de la Loire.

Until the mid 1990’s SYSTRA had concentrated on the design, delivery, operation and management of Light Rail (trams), Heavy Rail systems and associated disciplines. Even today it continues to be a global leader in these fields; having been involved in the delivery/operation of half of the world’s Light and Heavy Rail systems, and over half of the automated systems – an impressive record by any standards.

Those involved in the transport planning/consultancy business will have no doubt been familiar with the leading consultancies MVA (modelling and economic appraisal), SIAS (modelling and micro simulation) and JMP (transport and development planning). All were market leading brands in their own right, even though they were not large in corporate terms.

During the period from 1995 onwards these companies were progressively acquired by SYSTRA to form SYSTRA Ltd, an integrated consultancy business with strong links through SYSTRA Group to the wider SYSTRA family. A strong UK base consultancy was thus established to work closely on UK and overseas projects with one of the worlds’ leading transport infrastructure providers.

So, while appearing to be a relatively new brand, SYSTRA Ltd. encompasses the wide range of collective skills and experience of a group of market leading companies. The Group takes pride in its wide range of skills and activities, which it applies to public and private sector projects on behalf of a wide range of clients.

The Liverpool office, originally established by JMP Consultants Ltd in Castle Chambers on Castle Street, is now located in The Cotton Exchange, Bixteth Street and accommodates a team of professionals delivering a range of skills to local and national clients. These skills cover the following key areas;

• Transport Policy and Planning
• Development Planning
• Traffic Engineering
• Transport Environmental
• Sustainable Travel Planning

Its' Manchester office accommodates professionals delivering a range of complementary services as well as those above.

Phil Halewood, who has recently joined the Liverpool Office as Associate Director, is optimistic for the future of the team and business; “The Merseyside and northwest economy and the market for our type of work is very buoyant at the moment and we are recruiting more staff as well as doing more business. Having spent the last three years in Manchester I was unsure how things would compare but there is a healthy amount of development and infrastructure investment planned and underway. This is always good to see; such activity reinforces the view that the City Region is moving forward and not resting on its laurels.”. He also adds; “What is more important, however, is that there seems to be no lack of ambitious plans for the future development of the City Region.”.

Phil or his colleagues would be only happy to talk to members about the wide range of transport related consultancy they can offer from the Liverpool office; one of 17 throughout the UK.
