Travel to work: Opportunity for employers to have their say

One of the key barriers to accessing employment is transport, which not only impacts on those looking for employment but also those who risk falling out of employment without travel support.

There are a number of ways in which employers can support their staff at little or no cost to their business, which have much wider benefits beyond the daily commute.

The recent workforce survey carried out by the British Chambers of Commerce highlighted the fact that nearly 50% of those surveyed in the North West offered no travel benefits to staff.

From the work the Chamber has done with businesses locally it is clear that many are not aware of the information and support available to enable them to support staff to reduce their travel costs as well as promoting physical and mental health and well being.

For example, cycling to work is linked with a 45% lower risk of developing cancer, and a 46% lower risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), compared to commuting by car, and a brisk 10 minute walk every day can make a difference to your health. Or have you thought about working directly with local public transport operators to enable staff to access travel passes at discounted rates, thereby cutting travel costs?

We want to ensure that, as employers, you have the support you need to access existing and future travel schemes and funding opportunities. By completing the very short survey below you can help to give city region employers a “voice” to help to inform priorities for future funding programmes at both national and local level.

It will take no more than a few minutes to complete and we have two £50 shopping vouchers to give away for those of you choosing to enter the prize draw.

You can find the survey here.

We welcome responses until Friday 27 October 2017.
