Donoghue Solicitors Earns Cyber Essentials Accreditation

Tue, November 6th, 2018

Donoghue Solicitors recently became Cyber Essentials accredited. Read why here.

Hatton Garden-based Donoghue Solicitors recently became one of the first law firms in Merseyside to be awarded Cyber Essentials accreditation. By doing so, the firm became part of a select club. It joins national and international organisations, including

 • Royal Bank of Scotland
• Deloitte accountants
• Dell computers
• Galliford Try construction
• Manchester Metropolitan University
• Liverpool Women’s Hospital.

Cyber Essentials is the UK’s cyber security assurance scheme. The government set it up using the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSS). NCSS worked with industry to produce the scheme. It aims to help organisations protect themselves against cyber-attacks such as
• hacking
• phishing
• password guessing.

It can also help organisations comply with GDPR. The scheme requires compliance in five areas of security and technical controls. These are:
1. boundary firewalls and internet gateways
2. secure configuration
3. access control
4. malware protection
5. patch management.

Kevin Donoghue, solicitor director of the Liverpool-based law firm, described how it satisfied the scheme’s requirements. He said, “We
• surveyed our entire IT system with a focus on cyber-based threats

• reviewed and updated policy documents to meet the scheme requirements

• put the policies in action, adopting the latest technology where necessary.”

The solicitor continued, “We only applied for accreditation once we had completed all steps. This involved completing a questionnaire and submitting documents in support. A government-approved external certifying body vetted our submission. I am proud to confirm that we passed the certification process at the first attempt.”

Reflecting on the process, Mr Donoghue said that, “I understand that we are now one of fewer than 2% of law firms nationwide with Cyber Essentials accreditation.” This includes firms which must get accredited to bid for government contracts. “We are not one of those firms,” he clarified.

He explained that the process was a “natural progression” for Donoghue Solicitors. "We have always taken our clients’ data security seriously,” he said.

Mr Donoghue pointed out that "We were one of the first law firms in the UK to upgrade its websites with industry-leading 256-bit encryption keys and Extended Validation. Other companies protecting website users in this way include Santander, Apple, John Lewis, and Tesco.”

The solicitor noted that Cyber Essentials accreditation took time, money, and staff resources. But "It was worth it because cyber risks are changing. Attacks get more sophisticated every day. Getting accredited proves that our commitment to our clients’ online security extends to essential cyber risks. We will do everything we can to protect their sensitive and personal information.”
