Pupils from Broadway Primary School bag advice from top leather craftsmen

Pupils from year six at Broadway Primary School in Haslingden bagged lots of advice and insights on a recent visit to a specialist leather satchel workshop in Knowsley. Designed to link learning with the real world the trip to The Leather Satchel Company was organised by teacher Trudy Hamilton in support of a bag design project. 30 pupils enjoyed a visit to the state of the art workshop, where they could see the bags being designed and watch the specialist craftsmen put them together by hand using traditional methods.

Trudy said the trip was an important part of bringing the project to life for the children. “I like to relate learning to the workplace because that really enthuses the pupils and gives meaning to their work. It was great to see the range of manufacturing methods used and the children were really inspired by the visit. “Our project brings into play lots of skills, including getting an appreciation of the benefits of using ethically-sourced materials and producing things in a socially responsible way.

The Leather Satchel Company delivered this for us big style and the children had a great day.” The children will be completing their own bags in due course. “There will be lots of fur, feathers and sequins on our versions, but the sewing together by hand won’t be a million miles away from what they do here,” added Trudy. Director and master craftsman Keith Hanshaw said it was great to see the pupil’s enthusiasm. “They were really interested in watching the bags being made up and the handmade process from design to completion and despatch and were a credit to the school.”

The firm sent the school home with one of its top-selling satchels. Trudy again: “It will be used for raffle prize at our Christmas fair.
