Ongoing instability across parts of the Middle East is causing significant disruption to both maritime and air‑freight operations.
Heightened security conditions have led many shipping lines to adjust their services. These measures include delayed departures, rerouted vessels, and temporary offshore holding until safe passage is confirmed.
Some ports and logistics hubs across the wider Gulf region are experiencing slowdowns, while others remain operational with enhanced security in place. As a result, carriers have warned that businesses may face:
- Longer transit times
- Short‑notice schedule changes
- Temporary rerouting of cargo
- Increased freight rates or emergency surcharges
Exporters and importers are encouraged to review upcoming sea‑freight movements passing through the affected region and remain in close communication with supply‑chain partners.
Widespread Airspace Closures
Airspace across Iran, Iraq, Israel, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the UAE has been closed or is subject to rapid shutdowns due to escalating military action.
Major airports including Dubai International Airport and several regional hubs—have suspended operations, removing substantial transit and cargo capacity. Doha and other Gulf airports have also faced closures. With airlines avoiding Middle Eastern airspace, flights are being rerouted across Europe and Central Asia, resulting in longer journey times and increased operational costs.
Impact on UK Exporters
UK businesses should expect:
- Extended delivery times caused by rerouting and capacity shortages
- Higher freight rates and war‑risk surcharges
- Potential last‑minute flight cancellations or schedule changes
We strongly recommend reviewing routing for all current and planned shipments, maintaining close contact with freight forwarders and carriers, and preparing for increased logistics costs and longer lead times.
