Coronavirus and Flybe demonstrate the need for resilience

Paul Cherpeau, Chief Executive of Liverpool Chamber:

'Yesterday I attended the Annual Conference of our national association, the British Chambers of Commerce in London. The keynote speaker slot was provided to Matt Hancock, the Heath & Social Secretary, whose comment about the rarity of having the Chamber conference addressed by the Health minister was particularly reflective of the current climate. You can read his speech about the government’s coronavirus response here.

Clearly, the challenging climate for many businesses has been heightened by the potential impact of the virus. The collapse of Flybe, whilst not a complete surprise, was exacerbated by the customer behaviour triggered by the outbreak. The adaptation of businesses to adhere to the official governmental advice is key and governmental measures to enable this is being lobbied for by Chambers and other associations.

Businesses are being encouraged to adhere to public health information and adapt their risk registers and continuity plans accordingly. Key sources of information are available through the government website here and here.

If you have any insights around the impact of the virus on your business, either concerning internal operations, trade issues or otherwise, please share them with us so we can pass them on (anonymously if helpful) to partners in the public sector and government.'
