A message from Liz Collins, Interim Managing Director, TransPennine Express

Firstly, may I thank our customers who have continued travelling with us during this difficult time. The impact of Covid-19 (Coronavirus) is being felt far and wide throughout the United Kingdom and the rail industry is no different.

As a company, we are following the advice given to us by the Rail Delivery Group, NHS and Public Health England. As long as the advice that traveling on trains is safe, we will continue running services and getting our customers to where they need to be.

However, due to a decrease in travel and the knock-on effect that the virus is having on the industry, there may be changes to our services and we are asking our customers to please check before they travel. The latest travel information can be found at: https://www.journeycheck.com/tpexpress/

Should any of our customers be affected due to this, you can follow the information which is provided further down this page to amend journeys or even claim a refund.

We will continue to keep you, our customers, updated as we go through the challenges we are facing together.

Thank you,

Liz Collins

Travelling with TransPennine Express

Our customers plan may need to change due to the impact of Covid-19 such as the need to self-isolate or if holidays have been cancelled. Customers should follow the advice below to see how they can change their journey of if they are entitled to a refund.

Customers that purchased their tickets via the TPE website or the TPE app can apply for a refund (if their tickets are refundable) via our website, and if customers booked their tickets at a station they can also claim for a refund online at: https://www.tpexpress.co.uk/help/refunds

Admin fees: TPE will be waiving refund admin fees.

Advanced ticket refunds: The cheapest advanced fare tickets are not normally transferable. However, given the current situation surrounding Covid-19, advanced tickets can be rescheduled free of charge on the basis that an increase in ticket price is covered by the customer (and the change is requested before the original travel date). For details of how to do this, please visit: https://www.tpexpress.co.uk/help/change-my-ticket

Season ticket refunds: There will be no change to existing approaches to Season ticket refunds.

Customers who purchased their tickets through third party retailers such as the Trainline would need to contact them directly and not TPE.

What is TPE doing to combat Covid-19?

We have been monitoring the situation since it arose and we continue to look at ways to better protect our customers. At stations and on board our trains, our cleaning teams are focusing on cleaning those areas that customers are more likely to touch, such as handrails, tables and ticket vending machines. We have also reviewed our products that we use on trains to ensure they are anti-viral where appropriate. There are also procedures in place in case some of our trains need to be deep cleaned at short notice.

All TPE colleagues have been issued with the advice provided by Public Health England and are following this, such as washing their hands for 20 seconds. This advice is also on board our trains and at TPE managed stations.

All of our managed stations with toilet facilities and trains also have soap and water available for customers to wash their hands. Should any train you travel on or any station you travel through not have these facilities available, please make a member of TPE staff aware or should you not see one, contact our social media team on Twitter or WhatsApp.

Protecting yourself from Covid-19

To protect yourself and others from the spread of Covid-19, we recommend that you follow the advice given by the NHS and Public Health England. This is:

Always wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and hot water when you get home or into work
Use anti-viral hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available
Avoid close contact with people who are unwell where possible
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue, or your sleeve if you don’t have a tissue, when you cough or sneeze, do not use your hands
Put used tissues in a bin straight away and wash your hands for 20 seconds afterwards
Avoid touching your face, eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean
If you are on one of our trains and there is no soap available, or if the bins are full, please contact a member of TPE staff on board, or via Twitter or WhatsApp, so our cleaning teams can address this.

If you have travelled abroad in the past 14 days, check the advice for travellers on the NHS website. If you think you have come into close contact with someone who has Covid-19 or are showing symptoms you should call NHS 111.
