Northern Service Update - Coronavirus & travel pass change

Northern Rail have made changes to services and travel passes in light of...

We wanted to update you on our service plans as the rail industry is working to match the demand for services, particularly in supporting critical travel for key workers, along with its available resource.

Yesterday evening we announced our plan to cancel a small number of services across our network today. We will keep you updated on this process but expect we will need to announce further planned cancellations for tomorrow. As this situation is constantly evolving, we will be communicating those changes through our normal channels later today.

We continue to work with industry partners to balance the need to run services against available resource. We are using some of our previous experience of strike timetable planning to help inform this process and you may be aware that Transport for the North (TfN) is gathering views from its members on their priority requirements.

This work is happening now and is in line with national developments. We know that you will be keen to understand any potential impact and plans and we are committed to briefing you as soon as we can. Where we can, we will use existing stakeholder networks such as TfN officer groups to help share this information. We also appreciate your support in sharing our service plans with your networks.

We would also like to inform you that Northern will be relaxing the current peak travel time restriction on all Local Travel Passes and ENCTS (Elderly) passes with effect from Monday 23 March 2020 due to the Covid-19 outbreak. This will allow travel for essential appointments / shopping early in the morning.

All Local Travel Passes for older people and disabled travellers as well as ENCTS (Elderly) passes will therefore be valid on all Northern services operating within Merseyside/Liverpool City Region until further notice.
