‘Build Back Better’ will need more than a slogan

Wed, April 29th, 2020

Paul Cherpeau, Chief Executive of Liverpool Chamber of Commerce:

This past week has been another dizzying week for everyone working through this pandemic figuring out how to deal with the present day challenges as well as those horizon-scanning ahead within their own businesses.

‘Build Back Better’ has become the phrase used to talk about our economic recovery and the attempts to restart the economy over the coming year and beyond.

It’s critical that ‘Build Back Better’ fully includes genuine discourse and dialogue with businesses and is grounded in both realism and practicality. So many of our members – and those of other associations we have been working with – are reporting a near endless list of challenges around cashflow, people management, investment, insurance and health.

We’re pleased to have supported several businesses over the past weeks with solutions to issues, collection and articulation of business need and – at times – an unofficial counselling service.

Now we intend to ramp this up. We need your input to help inform the day to day work and the restart plans for the economy.

We want a demand-led approach to economy recovery and the Chamber’s delivery of service and support through these impending difficult months.

  • Where are the successes, failures and gaps of existing support for your business?
  • What key questions do you want answering about restart?
  • What does your business need imminently to survive and ultimately prosper?

We’ll work with partner organisations in both the public and private sector to tackle case work from members and we’ll be putting together a programme of webinars, workshops and meetings to help support the economic restart process.

We’d also welcome your thoughts around the future service delivery of the Chamber. Like any business, we’re evaluating how we can best support our member businesses over the coming period and deliver a positive contribution to businesses during this most difficult period.

Tell us what you need. Contact us at policy@liverpoolchamber.org.uk or talk to me and the team.
