The Government has today announced over £600 million worth of investment in the northern rail network to drive improvements across the region, including release of £589 million for work to upgrade and electrify Transpennine main line. It has also announced the establishment of the new Northern Transport Acceleration Council, led by Grant Shapps as Northern Powerhouse Minister, which will give northern leaders a ‘direct line’ to ministers to accelerate transport projects. The body’s work to drive progress across the North will be supported by Department for Transport staff based in northern cities.

Commenting on the announcement, Paul Cherpeau, CEO of Liverpool Chamber said: “We welcome this commitment by the Government which has the potential to deliver what has long been promised and for which we have lobbied hard. Connecting Liverpool with other conurbations in the North and the Midlands is a crucial if we are to enable faster and more reliable journeys for passengers, providing a sustainable alternative to travelling by car.

“The creation of the new council should enable all partners, including businesses, to work collaboratively to deliver the overhaul of our transport network in the North. Together with progress on HS2, the pledge to deliver Northern Powerhouse Rail and the attainment of a genuine multi-modal integration of transport, there are considerable opportunities to level up the UK economy. Businesses will welcome this investment as a tangible commitment to the North but it is imperative that they are part of the conversation with local partners.”
