Hello and welcome to your regional stakeholder update

As we enter the second national lockdown, we are updating our business continuity plans in response to the emerging national picture. Some elements are already starting to become clearer; such as the requirement for any volunteer activities at stations to be undertaken by a maximum of two people. The north continues to see an increase in COVID cases and more people needing to isolate or shield. Although manageable at this stage, like any sensible organisation, we are looking at contingency plans if the absence level begins to impact on our ability to run a reliable timetable. We remain extremely grateful for your understanding in these unprecedented times.

Over the past few weeks, we have seen encouraging progress in a number of areas, such as driver training as we work towards our next timetable uplift on 14 December. This has not been without its challenges as we embark on a significant internal COVID testing programme to provide COVID secure training bubbles for our instructors and trainees. I am pleased with how we have quickly adapted to safely re-introduce training.

The past month has seen the launch of our Mobility Scooter Permit Scheme which will make a real difference to our customers who use these. Following a successful trial, permits are now being issued for more than 100 stations across the Northern network. Further details of the scheme, including maps of the stations, the types of scooters which are accepted under the scheme, frequently asked questions and a form to apply for a Scooter ‘Rail Ready’ permit can be found here: www.northernrailway.co.uk/mobilityscooter.

From 26 October, we re-established a regular timetable on our Manchester Piccadilly-Rose Hill Marple route following a period where services were temporarily suspended as a direct result of the impact of COVID on our train crew training programmes. Trains are now operating every 90 minutes between approximately 06:30 and 18:00. Evening services continue to be served by our Rail Replacement Bus and Ring and Ride service.

As we move through the Autumn period, you may be interested to know that leaf fall has accelerated in recent weeks and has now reached 50%. Performance has remained good on many routes over the past couple of months, which is a reflection of the work we have undertaken with industry colleagues in preparing for the season.
