First prize winner of the John Moores Painting Prize 2023 to be announced on 14 September

You are invited to a press call announcing the first prize winner of the John Moores Painting Prize 2023.

Paintings by Nicholas Baldion, Graham Crowley, Emily Kraus, Damian Taylor and Francisco Valdes have been shortlisted from more than 3,000 entries.

The winner of the Lady Grantchester Prize for emerging artists will also be announced.

The announcement comes ahead of the opening of the John Moores Painting Prize 2023 exhibition which opens at Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery on 16 September 2023 until 25 February 2024.

The 2023 jury – Alexis Harding, Chila Kumari Singh Burman MBE, Marlene Smith, The White Pube and Yu Hong – chose the prize winners and the long list of other exhibiting artists from more than 3,000 entries – the most the John Moores Painting Prize has ever received.

Members of the jury will make the announcement and will be available for interview, along with the shortlisted artists and Sandra Penketh, Executive Director of Galleries and Collections Care at National Museums Liverpool.

The exhibition will be open for media from 5pm, with the winners’ announcement at 6:15pm. Opportunities for interview will follow until 7pm, when you will be invited to stay at the gallery for a canapé reception.
