Wirral apprentice to spearhead national skills shortage campaign

Cameron Woolley, an apprentice digital marketer from the Wirral working at Knauf Insulation in St Helens, is to front a new campaign designed to fill the skills gap in the multi-billion-pound building materials supply sector.

The 20-year-old is one of three people working in the building materials sector chosen as a ‘face’ of the BMF (Builders Merchants Federation’s) national Building Material Careers campaign, officially launched ahead of National Apprenticeship Week (10-16 Feb).

The campaign harnesses the power of a £51.6 billion sector with more than 1,020 companies, to tackle recruitment challenges.

Its target is school leavers, trainees and those looking for a career change.

Cameron headed to London to share his experiences in the sector at the official launch on 5th Feb, before heading to a reception at the Houses of Parliament

He also shares his apprenticeship experience on the dedicated bmcareers.com website, which provides a window on the opportunities available and offers those interested in the industry a pathway to the sector.

Cameron said:

“The apprenticeship route has transformed my life.

“I am an active advocate for apprenticeships within the building materials sector and the sheer scope and scale of the career campaign means we can reach many more people, which is really exciting, and show what opportunities there are in our sector.”

John Newcomb, CEO of the BMF said:

“This careers campaign unites the building materials sector, bringing organisations – such as Knauf Insulation – that collectively form a major part of the UK economy together, to showcase the opportunities for the future.

“We need to invest in a building materials supply chain that brings a diversity of skills to produce the materials needed for a new generation of construction projects for the future, including meeting the government’s pledge to build 1.5million homes in the UK.

“Cameron is a key example of someone who is already showcasing the value of apprenticeships and we are extremely pleased that he is furthering that work in the building materials sector by sharing his story and supporting the Building Materials Careers campaign.”
