Liverpool Chamber winning at taking Mersey firms to the global market
Liverpool & Sefton Chamber of Commerce is reporting huge growth the number of firms and organisations it has helped to slash the costs of taking goods and equipment abroad.
Companies often need to take equipment overseas for short periods - this can range from businesses exhibiting at trade shows to film and television makers taking cameras and other technical kit abroad
If they are travelling outside of the EU then they could find themselves paying hefty import duties.
The best way is minimising those costs is to apply for an ATA Carnet.
A Carnet is an international customs document which allows the temporary importation and subsequent re-importation of commercial samples, professional equipment or goods.
Liverpool & Sefton Chamber’s expertise in arranging Carnets is well established and in the past year or so it has seen a big increase in the number of firms - from the Liverpool city region and beyond - it has helped.
Prior to March 1st 2015, the chamber processed and issued 30 to 40 ATA Carnets annually for a small group of regular export documentation customers.
However, in the 21 months to the end of 2016, it delivered 1,625+ ATA Carnets to dozens of companies across the UK.
It has issued an average of 78 carnets a month using a system provided by its technology partner, Boomerang Carnets.
The chamber’s director of international trade, Andy Snell, was instrumental in striking the deal with Boomerang.
He said: “We are encouraging as many Liverpool city region firms as possible to increase their exports or start trading overseas for the first time.
“Attending trade fairs or taking samples and equipment overseas for short periods is an essential part of that process.
“Potential customers want to see what they are going to get. The ATA Carnet system provides a cost-effective route to avoiding punishing import duties.
“The explosive rise in the number of Carnets we have issued means we are providing a major boost to the city region economy and UK plc - and we are keen to grow this service even more.”
