Smokefree Liverpool on smoking and COVID-19 risks...

Smokefree Liverpool hopes this message finds you all safe and well. Please see below the latest evidence regarding the links between smoking and the increasing risk of COVID19.

Smoking and COVID19 Risk

The Chief Medical Officer and Health Secretary have both highlighted that all smokers are at increased risk from COVID19. Smoking harms the immune system, reducing the bodies’ natural protection against infections, like coronavirus. Smokers are therefore at greater risk of:

  • acute respiratory infections
  • longer lasting periods of infection
  • infections being more serious than would be for someone who does not smoke

Smokers have more risk of respiratory infections, including coronavirus, than someone who doesn’t smoke and may experience more severe symptoms.

Smokefree Liverpool would like to take this opportunity to inform you that we are continuing to accept referrals from your organisation and others including, GP’s, Midwives, Respiratory Health Teams and Pharmacies. We are also continuing to receive self-referrals from smokers from all over Liverpool.

For those who wish to use this time to make a positive lifestyle change, our online services are of course still open. This includes the Quit with Bella app, your very own personal stop smoking coach, who is available to download via Android, iOS and Alexa. Bella has been developed using the knowledge of our highly experienced stop smoking advisors and can be on hand 24/7 to help you on your Smokefree journey.
