As September approaches and we think about our children returning to school...

As September approaches and we think about our children returning to school and college, there are likely to be many questions on how this is going to work, often starting with ‘how to get them there’. To support school, sixth form and college pupils in safely travelling to their place of study, Arriva have created a handy guide on what buses you can catch and all the essential information you need to know on social distancing. The full details can be found at

All Arriva buses are Covid-19 secure and undergo enhanced touchpoint cleaning each day. Good ventilation of fresh air is ensured by keeping windows open wherever possible. To help reduce the amount of physical contact between pupils and drivers, Arriva are asking pupils to only use contactless payment or tickets via the Arriva UK Bus app. Cash will only be accepted as a form of payment in exceptional circumstances and where the correct fare can be paid, Arriva drivers will not be able to provide change at this time.

Phil Stone, Regional Managing Director for Arriva North said “Throughout the COVID19 crisis, our priority has been to ensure the safety of our customers and our staff, whilst continuing to provide essential bus services across our regions. As September approaches and a new academic year begins, safety on board our buses continues to be of huge importance, particularly as we welcome back to bus our school & college pupils. There are some elements of bus travel that are operating slightly differently this year. We have worked closely with our local authorities and regional stakeholders to ensure Arriva provides a thorough schools & college bus service from September”

For some services, this will mean extra buses running on key routes at peak travelling time.
Details of which services are being given extra support, as well as how to differentiate buses dedicated for school children, can be found on the new Arriva website & app, detailed within regional information pages. Pupils are advised to sit with others from their own school (and year group, if possible) if travelling on the same bus as pupils from another school.

Where possible we are asking pupils to maintain social distancing, although capacity on some dedicated school services will be increased, allowing students to sit next to each other and standing if necessary. The seats behind the driver and any facing each other will be taped off and should not be used. Arriva recommends that all pupils over the age of 11 wear a face covering (exemptions apply)

You can find full timetable details in the Arriva UK Bus app which is free to download from the app store or via
