  • Where the law on mental health came from
  • The origins of mental health
  • Understanding of what mental health conditions are now and in the past
  • The different approaches to treating mental illness
  • The development of the Medical vs Social model of treatment
  • Work Houses, Asylums, Community Services and Modern Hospitals
  • Modern approach to providing mental health services and the current law
  • National Service Framework

Learning Outcomes

  • An overview of where mental health concepts came from and where they are now
  • To provide participants with an understanding of the development of mental health law, treatment and services
  • To enable participants to put into context and understand how our mental health system developed to its current form
  • Help participants to understand where attitudes towards mental illness came from
  • To enable participants to understand the origins of the Medical vs Social models of treatment of mental illness

Who is this training for?

This training is specifically designed to enable care practitioners, whether community nurses, social workers, care staff and support staff to understand the development of Mental Health Law, Treatment and Services. It will provide the background knowledge and contextualise the mental health system so you understand some of the concepts of treatment and legislation we use today.

This training can be registered for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points.
