Innovation, innovation, innovation

Not for the first time, innovation is a hot topic of conversation across the Liverpool City Region at the moment.

The great news that we are in the running to be crowned European Capital of Innovation 2026 is clear recognition of the combined public and private sector efforts to push the boundaries of innovation and cement our strengths in areas such as health and life sciences, materials chemistry and digital technology.

Liverpool’s bid, entitled ‘LIFE’ (Liverpool Innovates For Everyone), reflects the city and city region’s commitment to inclusive innovation for the benefit of their communities, with Liverpool also recognised as the world’s first UN Accelerator City on Climate Change. Congratulations to those who have helped us get this far, and good luck for the next round of assessments.

This news followed hot on the heels of The British Science Festival, one of Europe’s longest-running science festivals, being hosted in Liverpool last week. I attended a panel event led by Professor Dame Jane Francis, president of the British Science Association, who spoke eloquently about the merits of vaccines and the dangers of misinformation online.

It is beyond doubt that culture, leisure and tourism will always be crucial to Liverpool’s ongoing prosperity. However, this latest period of recognition also helps to further shift the dial towards establishing the reputation and potential of Liverpool’s knowledge economy.

Indeed, culture and innovation are set to combine at this year’s River of Light Festival when the popular annual public art display adopts a special scientific twist for the first time, once again underlining how important both are to our social and economic tapestry.

We can also look forward to the Chamber’s very own Innovation in Business Awards, which take place just over a month from now, on October 23. The essence of the awards is to shine a spotlight on the city region businesses that are innovating to get ahead – whether that’s through technology, skills or the way they support their team or clients.

The event at St George’s Hall will be a celebration with more 400 business leaders, innovators, and changemakers and it promises to be a night to remember. A limited number of tickets remain available, if you would like to join us.
