“Rumours of a new support package for pubs will doubtless be welcomed by operators, but there needs to be more consistent support and understanding of the wider hospitality sector among policymakers. It is unfair and unacceptable to push businesses towards a cliff-edge, only to reverse the situation at the 11th hour after a period of pressure.
“Liverpool is known for the warmth of its hospitality and that is woven into our social and economic fabric. These venues underpin the strength of our visitor economy, create thousands of jobs and make an indelible impact on the physical landscape across the city region.
“Pubs, bars and other outlets deserve more respect and need to be protected from spiralling cost increases. The looming hike in business rates following the reduction of relief in the last Budget left many facing another new precipice following successive years of challenges.
“I would urge the government to take a longer-term view on its measures in this area and give landlords and operators the certainty and confidence they need to keep on growing, employing people and adding to our local economy.”
