Hugh Baird College’s GCSE English students recently took part in a nationwide competition for 11-18 year olds to write a 100-word short story that twists the narrative of classic stories to give the villain of the tale a voice.
An impressive six of Hugh Baird College’s aspiring authors were successful in the competition. Their inspiring stories were chosen and will be included in ‘Twisted Tales – 2022: Wonderful Words’, which will be published in June 2022.
The Hugh Baird College writers who will have their stories published are:
- Abdulrahman Alshamari – The Most Heinous Villian
- Daniel Duggan – Science Troubles
- Isaac Junior Omobude – Captain Hook and Peter Pan
- Reem Yasmin – Evil Witch
- Sophie Owens – Sid Gone Good
- Thomas Mawdsley – Live Hard
Hugh Baird College GCSE English Tutor, Mark Tooke, comments on the experience of the students:
“Creating our 100-word Twisted Tales was challenging but great fun. I am so excited for our published students and cannot wait to see their names and stories in print.”
The competition organisers, YoungWriters, host National Writing Competitions throughout the academic year for various age groups, including those in secondary school and college.
Twisted Tales sets out to inspire students to think of new ways to develop stories creatively whilst having empathy in their short pieces of writing.
Competition winner, Sophie Owens, said:
“I can’t wait to see a story I have written published in a real book; it is an amazing achievement for us all.”
Another competition winner, Thomas Mawdsley, said:
“Having my story published is an extremely big deal for me, this experience has helped boost my confidence.”
