An Introduction to Roy Castle

Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation is the leading UK lung cancer charity dedicated to helping everyone affected by the disease.

Since 1990, when the charity was set up by Professor Ray Donnelly, we have funded millions of pounds of essential lung cancer research, looking for ways to detect the disease as early as possible and save lives.

We support everyone affected by lung cancer – from diagnosis, through treatment, living with the disease and end of life care. We raise awareness, prevent future generations from getting it and challenge the misconceptions of lung cancer. We do all this so those diagnosed can live well with lung cancer for as long as possible.

Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation aims to…

Prevent people dying from lung cancer by:

  • Promoting and funding research into the early detection of lung cancer
  • Working with NHS England to increase uptake onto their Community Health Check programmes across the UK
  • Raising public awareness of the signs and symptoms of lung cancer and the importance of early detection
  • Challenging the misconceptions around the disease
  • Campaigning for better outcomes for lung cancer patients.

Improve the lives of those affected by the disease by:

  • Promoting and funding research into patient experience
  • Running lung cancer support groups and information day’s across the UK
  • Providing financial patient relief grants
  • Offering nurse-led telephone and online support
  • Providing specialist information resources to patients and the NHS

Our charity motto is: Expect Better

Lung cancer is a disease that affects so many people; young and old, men and women, smoker, non-smoker and never smoker, lung cancer can affect anyone.

Taking more lives than breast, prostate and pancreatic cancers combined, lung cancer tears thousands of families apart and the pandemic has only made an already devastating disease even more deadly.

Our research into early detection has laid the groundwork for lung cancer screening and we are proud to be supporting NHS England on the rollout of its Targeted Lung Health Check programmes. These programmes, coupled with our #needtoscreen campaign, has led to the National Screening Committee recommending a national targeted screening programme for lung cancer, which will cover the whole of the UK, and will save thousands of lives. We are now just awaiting approval from the Health Secretary for a national targeted screening programme to become a reality.

Early diagnosis is key, and these life-saving initiatives mean more people will be able to have curative treatment.

In addition to funding over £30 million into lung cancer research, Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation supports thousands of people living with the disease. From online support sessions to our Ask the Nurse helpline and patient grants, our practical, emotional, and financial support is vital to support all those affected by all forms of lung cancer.

The scope of everything we do at Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, the world-class experts we work with and the life-changing impact we make would not be possible without the generosity and support of our supporters and neither would the hope it provides.
