Commercial kitchen donation helps bring Joy to life in Wirral

Young person’s mental health charity Open Door is a step closer to realising its plans for an innovative new facility in Wirral, thanks to support from local businesses.

The organisation acquired the Joy Building in Hamilton Square in August 2024 and hopes to transform it into a space where mental health, culture and social action interact, housing the entirety of its operations alongside partner third-sector organisations and the NHS.

Open Door has now taken delivery of a range of repurposed commercial kitchen appliances, courtesy of M&E, HVAC and commercial fit-out firm Kimpton, which is working with Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena and Sodexo.

The appliances will support the creation of a new cafe and hub area, which will sit alongside a range of meeting spaces, a new performance space, meeting rooms, office space and hot desks, as well as dedicated spaces for partner agencies, in the newly-reimagined building.

George Hawkins, Joy Project director at Open Door, said:

“Our goal with Joy is to set a standard for better ways of working and living, while fostering spaces for meaningful connection. Joy will be a space for everyone, with limitless possibilities for what can be achieved within it

“As a local organisation, we are incredibly grateful for the support of individuals and businesses, and this generous donation of high-quality kitchen equipment gives us a massive boost as we work towards transforming Joy and realising our ambitions for innovative mental health support in Wirral.”

Matt Breakwell, business development director at Kimpton, said:

“We firmly believe in doing business the right way and supporting our local communities wherever possible. When the opportunity came along to help Open Door with their incredible plans for Joy, we were delighted to be able to do so with our partners.”

“We look forward to seeing the redevelopment of Joy continue to take shape and hope to find further ways to support the charity in the future.”

Eddie Dos Santos, director of operations and venue management at The ACC Liverpool Group, said:

“It’s been a privilege to support Open Door’s innovative new facility. At ACC Liverpool, we’re deeply committed to strengthening our local community and creating a lasting, positive impact across the Liverpool City Region and beyond.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to see these appliances given a second life and used in a way that genuinely makes a difference. We’re proud to invest in projects like this, which reflect our ongoing commitment to social value and meaningful community engagement.”
